Ruby Mackay

I am the Principal Tutor and Founder of the Chalmers Mackay MUSIC School which was established in 1989.

I am a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, studying there from 1973 – 76 gaining a teaching qualification in Musical Education, specialising in Bach piano technique ( I won the William Friskin Memorial Prize Class A in 1975.

Whilst at the Academy I studied piano with Miles Coverdale and singing with Winifred Busfield, my third study was oboe with Marion Ayres (Scottish National Orchestra).

During my Teachers Training year, which I did in Aberdeen, I completed a further qualification with the London Guildhall School of Music for performance singing (Classical) in 1977, under the expertise of Elizabeth Izaat.

I attended the University of St Andrews to gain an Advanced Diploma in Jazz – June 2000.

My teaching career began in Orkney in 1977, where I spent six years as an itinerant teacher of music, travelling to seven different schools each week, working with children of age 5 years to 18 years.

During 1983, my career took a change in direction when I left Orkney to work in a professional Country Music Band.   I felt I needed to broaden my horizons with regard to my musical experiences, and I also wanted to travel.

In the 6 years that followed I Toured Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and America,(where we appeared on the Nashville Grand Ole Opry), also taking part in numerous Radio and TV Broadcasts.   It was at this time that I met my husband Sandy and after our time ‘on the road’ we decided to settle down to raise our family, which meant me putting my career on hold for a time.   I start teaching again as a private tutor while being at home with our children Debrah and Robbie.

Over those previous nine years I also worked as a freelance Presenter for the BBC.

The nucleus of the Chalmers Mackay Music School was formed with just 12 pupils back in 1989.

I find teaching to be an envigorating and satisfying experience, and enjoy working with students of all age-groups and abilty.   I am passionate about my work – teaching piano, electric keyboard, and voice is a most rewarding experience for me, and I am so glad I chose this for my career.

I have a very broad taste in Music, and enjoy playing or listening to anything from Classical, to Traditional Scottish, to Folk Music, Country, Rock and Jazz.   I have recorded 8 Albums under the pseudonym Ruby Rendall, and enjoy writing and arranging songs.  I utilize this musical experience I have built up over the years within my teaching where appropriate.   My aim is to help my students get the very best out of themselves, to enjoy their music making, feel a sense of achievement and to help them pave the way for a successful career in music if that is their ultimate goal.

My hobbies include cycling, walking our dogs Jarviz and Tia, songwriting and composition, gardening, golf, promoting young people in the Music Business, and organising and supporting Charity Events.
